CASE STUDY 1: Sellafield Ltd

Sellafield Ltd

The Issue

In 2009, Sellafield Ltd launched an organisation-wide efficiency savings programme. Up to this point, training for Sellafield Ltd’s 10,000 staff had been largely delivered face-to-face. It was rightly recognised, however, that learning technologies could enable some training to be delivered more effectively and efficiently, potentially saving a large amount of the training budget. Sellafield Ltd set out to find an experienced partner to help them understand the options available and to help them make the best choices.

The Challenge

To introduce elearning to Sellafield Ltd and realise their return on investment in the shortest possible time, establishing elearning and blended learning as a key strand of their training and development strategy. We were selected from six leading UK elearning consultancies to work with Sellafield Ltd on this challenge.

The Process

Getting to know an organisation is vital when developing an elearning strategy. Their technical capabilities, existing skills, resources, ambitions and culture all influence the type of learning solutions that can be successfully implemented. We spent time on-site at Sellafield Ltd; conducting focus groups and meeting people from across the organisation. We identified their current challenges and discovered their shared vision for how the organisation should look in five years time. We considered the potential blocks to achieving this vision, identified solutions and mapped out a five-year 'roadmap' to realise this aim.

The Solution

Working with an organisation at the start of their elearning journey is our favourite way to engage with a client. In Sellafield Ltd’s case, it has enabled us to set them on the right path by recommending the best that learning technologies have to offer. It has also meant that we can bring maximum benefit to their learners and to their bottom line. We are at the start of an exciting journey with Sellafield Ltd.

Our recommendations to Sellafield Ltd included

  • The innovative use of informal media for knowledge capture and sharing
  • Collaborative elearning authoring to rapidly realise return on investment whilst building a reusable library of learning assets
  • The organisation-wide roll-out of a learning management system (LMS) so that they can track user completion and assessment data
  • The building and training of an in-house elearning development team so they can build their own learning content.

So, what did they think?....

"LearningAge Solutions provided Sellafield Ltd with a very cost effective elearning strategy. They have steered our Company through what was at first a bewildering task given the amount of potential solutions within the elearning field. I can highly recommend them as a partner and look forward to a continued relationship." - Mark Richards, Head of Training Delivery, Sellafield Ltd
